News / First yachts arrive
THE FIRST yachts participating in the annual Shetland Race between the Norwegian city of Bergen and Lerwick have arrived.
First over the line at Lerwick Harbour was the Norwegian yacht Solo 2 skippered by Rune Aasberg, followed by the only German entry Red with Matthias Mueller von Blumencron at the helm.
The remaining 32 yachts taking part in the 2016 event are expected to arrive during the course of the day. Their progress can be followed here.
Local solicitor Tommy Allan’s yacht Roundabout is currently at the back of the main field heading for Lerwick.
The crew of the Roundabout is raising funds and awareness of local mental health charity Mind Your Head.
While in Shetland the 200 sailors on board the yachts will be treated to local hospitality including a prize-giving reception at Mareel on Friday evening.
The second leg of the race back to Bergen will get under way on Saturday afternoon.
