News / Behind bars for heroin supply

A HEAVY drug user from Lerwick has been jailed for two and a half years after admitting a charge of being concerned in the supply of heroin earlier this year.

Police officers found that Kelly Ann Ross, of 34 Hoofields, had internally concealed 56.4 grams of the Class A substance when she was searched at her home on 19 March.

Lerwick Sheriff Court heard that the illegal drugs could have had a street value of up to £5,500 if broken down to the smallest units.

Officers executing a search warrant at the 38-year old’s home address also found equipment related to the supply of drugs including scales, along with £1,500 in cash.

Pleading for leniency, defence solicitor Keith Leishman said his client accepted that there was an element of supply but added that as an addict she was using as much as two grams per day.

Leishman added that Ross was trying to turn her life around and had started re-establishing contact with her son, who she hadn’t seen for two years.

However, Sheriff Philip Mann said he was not persuaded that a social work report would influence him against imposing a custodial sentence.

The sheriff jailed Ross for 30 months and ordered the forfeiture of the equipment found in her house.
