News / Ton up Timothy

A MOTORCYCLIST who overtook an unmarked police car at speeds of almost 100mph was landed with a £500 fine and nine penalty points at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Thursday.

Timothy Coote, of 12 St Sunniva Street, Lerwick, pled guilty to careless driving on the main A970 south of Voe.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said the 53 year old specialist field surveyor was stopped after he overtook an unmarked police car, which had to accelerate to around 100mph to catch up with him.

Defence agent Tommy Allan said his client realised he was going too fast, and the court case had given him a “scare”.

Sheriff Philip Mann said that despite the “great potential” for injury to Coote and others, he was not being charged with dangerous driving and was therefore allowed to keep his licence.
