News / Caffé Volare takes off
THE NEW café in the departure lounge at Sumburgh Airport enjoyed its official unveiling on Tuesday afternoon.
Caffé Volare, being run by Julie Moncrieff on behalf of G&B Anderson, launches with a promise of “high quality” coffee alongside luxury sandwiches, paninis and pastries.
Moncrieff said it had been a “splendid” and “fairly busy” launch.
“The opening went great and we’re just kind of finding our feet,” she said. “We were full-on from when the public came in at 2pm to half past eight, when we closed.
“We’ve had wonderful feedback about the coffee and tea – we’ve not had any complaints at all yet, which is lovely.”
G&B Anderson were approached by airport owners HIAL about opening the café as part of a wider £6.5 million refurbishment of the airport.
Moncrieff forged ahead with transforming the departure lounge and have recruited staff who are the first in Shetland to be professionally trained by the Scottish Barista School.
Moncrieff told Shetland News on Wednesday: “It’s quieter today, just with passenger numbers. I think when the staff on landside get used to telling people to come right through… it’s going to take a peerie while.
“I think that’s something that needs to be emphasised more – people can check in when they come into the airport and go to departures, they don’t need to sit on the other side.”
