A HUNGARIAN woman who sustained a life threatening head injury in a freak accident while on holiday in Germany is making good progress on her way to a full recovery.
Almost £7,000 have so far be raised in Shetland and in Hungary to help Anett Gyenge and her partner Gery Barta, who has been by her bedside for the last seven weeks.
The couple have been living in Shetland, where she works as a barmaid in the Shetland Hotel, since 2013.
The 33 year old hit her head badly when falling on wet cobbled stairs outside a church near Stuttgart on 19 July.
She was immediately airlifted to Ludwigsburg hospital where doctors performed a laryngectomy to help her breathe, removed a part of her skull and also put her into an induced coma.
From the middle of August she was in a specialist rehabilitiation hospital in Goppingen. She is making steady progress, but still awaits a second operation where doctors plan to place an implant over a gap in her skull.
This week Anett was temporarily discharged from the rehabilitation hospital to allow her to visit her family doctor in Budapest. Gery has travelled to Hungary with her. They will return to Germany for the implant operation.
The NHS has asked for a report from the German doctors, which they have been informed has been completed. Both sets of doctors should be in direct communication shortly.
Anett has improved a lot since the above photograph was taken. She no longer has any tubes and is able to speak and eat normally. Her balance is “good but she can’t bend or squat, she has to wear a helmet and have someone with her at all times.”
A small group of supporters met in Lerwick earlier this week where they were updated by Anett’s mother Maria on how her daughter was doing.
Speaking prior to Anett being moved to Budapest, spokeswoman Angela Sutherland said: “She is off all the machines and all tubes have been removed. She is eating on her own (pureed food only) and can speak without a microphone now.
“The hospital is also working Anett hard and they have a daily routine of physiotherapy, occupational therapy speech therapy as well as seeing a psychologist.
“Maria says that compared to many of the other patients on the ward Anett is really doing well but feels that she can’t relax until the final operation for the implant which is still a few weeks away.”
She said they had shown Anett the Facebook page and told her that funds have been raised but were not sure if she understood.
Sutherland added: “They are starting to worry about the next phase which includes the journey back to Shetland and what’s going to happen once they are home.
“Gary had to give up their flat in Lerwick because he doesn’t know how long he would be in Germany and couldn’t pay for both places.
“We will be starting to look for a new place for them once we know approximately when they’re due back.”
Meanwhile the fundraising effort to help the couple cope with the situation financially continues.
Sutherland added: “Thank you so much to everyone who shared our page or donated, this is going to make such a big difference to them.”
