News / Carnegie seeks funding
A REVIVED public hall in the south mainland of Shetland is seeking public support to help it win nearly £50,000 to replace its kitchen.
The Carnegie Hall in Sandwick has reached the final of the People’s Millions lottery fund competition and is in the running for a £47,946 grant.
Committee members say a new kitchen would make the hall a “more modern, functional place to hold community events and to appeal to local community groups”.
Efforts have been stepped up recently to save Carnegie Hall from closure, with big turnouts and much praise for the lengths the committee goes to in putting on a variety of events.
Recent months have seen successful folk music concerts, public meetings and a farmers’ market, along with regular social clubs and Sunday teas.
“Fundraising has been amazing as we see not only people from our own community but outwith – travelling from various parts of Shetland to join our fun,” a committee spokeswoman said. “We support many local charities and would like to see this aspect of our activities continue.”
The public voting day for Carnegie Hall is Tuesday 25 November, when members of the public will be able to phone in their support. A telephone number will be publicised nearer the time.
