News / Referendum event
LOCAL people are being offered the opportunity of debating the forthcoming Scottish independence referendum without party-political interference.
The Scottish Centre on Constitutional Change (SCCC) is hosting a public meeting in the Lerwick Town Hall on Thursday 3 July between 7 and 9pm.
The centre was established to help inform the Scottish referendum debate from a neutral and academic perspective.
A panel of four academics is travelling to Shetland to move the constitutional debate beyond the central belt.
SCCC director Professor Michael Keating, who will be hosting next week’s event, said the event would bring together academics from the fields of political science, economics, constitutional law and defence.
“This is an exciting opportunity for the centre to move the constitutional debate beyond its traditional areas, and to take our research to Shetland.”
“We hope for a good attendance at the event, and we’re keen for people to come along and hear about the research which has been undertaken in these areas, and to ask questions which they may feel have not been sufficiently answered by the respective campaigns,” the professor for political science said.
The other academics on the panel are: Professor Alan Page (University of Dundee – constitutional law), Professor Kim Swales (University of Strathclyde – economics) and Dr Colin Fleming (University of Edinburgh – defence).
