News / Faroese country star
AWARD winning Faroese country singer Hallur Joensen last night played the first of a trio of Shetland shows backed by the Brian Nicholson Band.
The organisers, Shetland Country Music Club, said his Thursday night set at the Garrison Theatre “went down a treat” with the crowd of country music fans.
Joensen is now eagerly looking forward to appearing at the Hamnavoe Hall tonight (Friday) and at the Legion in Lerwick on Saturday night.
He first came to Shetland to attend a Thomas Fraser concert back in 2011 and after introducing himself to the organisers was invited on stage for a rendition of ‘Fraulein’, much to the delight of a full house in Hamnavoe.
Joensen was then invited back to perform at the 2012 festival with friend and guitarist Beddi Hansen. Also backed by the Brian Nicholson Band on that occasion, he received a standing ovation at all three concerts.
Recently voted male singer of the year at the 2013 Faroese Music Awards, such is Joensen’s affinity with the islands that he turned down an invitation to perform before an audience of around 30,000 people in the USA in order to “come back and sing for you lovely people of Shetland”.
He has sung and played with famous artists including Kris Kristofferson, Charley Pride and the Bellamy Brothers to name just a few. His fourth album ‘With Stars and Legends’ was released back in June 2013 and is the best-selling CD ever released on the Faroese market.
• Tickets to see Hallur Joensen at Hamnavoe tonight and at the Lerwick Legion on Saturday are available from Shetland Box Office or on the door at each venue.
