News / Four drivers disqualified

A SHETLAND fisherman was the first of four drivers who lost their licence at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Thursday.

Robert Wynn, of 2 Grindibrek, Westerskeld, was banned for three years and fined £1,200 after admitting drink driving at Lerwick Esplanade on 2 May.

The court heard that the 27 year old was almost twice the legal limit when he was stopped by police.

Wynn has a previous conviction for drink driving dating back to 2006.

Next was Hartlepool man Steven Frost who pled guilty to drink driving on Lerwick’s Commercial Road in the early hours of 11 May.

The 44 year old, of 128 Grange Road, was disqualified for one year and fined £500.

Sheriff Philip Mann told the oil industry worker that he could reduce the period of disqualification by successfully completing a drink driver rehabilitation course.

Meanwhile Orkney man Oliver Chalmers was almost three times the legal limit when he crashed his car on the main A970 road between the north Gulberwick junction at Shurton Brae on 11 May.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said Chalmers, of 3 Sommerville Square, Kirkwall, had clearly not been in a fit state to walk, let alone drive.

The 27 year old admitted the offence and was banned for 20 months and fined £800.

The sheriff told Chalmers that he should consider himself fortunate that neither he nor any innocent member of the public were injured in the accident.

Finally, a Latvian national with address at Brookside, Lerwick, was banned for a year after admitting dangerous driving when he fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed his vehicle on the main A970 on 16 November last year.

The court heard that 30 year old Jurijs Plume had not slept for two days when the accident occurred between Sandwick and Shurton Brae.

Defence solicitor Tommy Allan said his client had lost his ability to appreciate how tired he was after taking on extra work at a time when he was also divorcing his wife.

Sheriff Mann fined Plume £400 and told him that he was obliged to disqualify him from driving for a minimum period of one year.

Plume has also to resit the extended driving test if he wants to drive again.
