News / Consultation extended
CONSULTATION on Shetland Islands Council’s plans to shut primary schools at North Roe and Urafirth has been extended by one week.
The statutory six-week period began on 16 April and was due to end on Friday 30 May. But after a “minor problem” was identified in one box on the electronic response form, the local authority has extended the deadline for submitting responses to Friday 6 June.
SIC quality improvement manager Audrey Edwards said: “We have had one minor error pointed out to us in one of the drop-down boxes… We are always sensitive to these issues, and so have decided to extend the statutory consultation period by one week to ensure this has not caused any potential respondent a problem.”
The council wants to shut the two primaries, along with the nursery at Urafirth, and transfer the pupils tor Ollaberry.
At a public meeting in Northmavine earlier this month councillors and officials faced a barrage of hostility towards the plans, which would save an estimated £190,000 a year.
