News / Water tanker on fire
A SCOTTISH Water tanker driver in Shetland had a lucky escape on Wednesday when the cabin of the lorry he was driving suddenly became engulfed in flames.
John Scott Cluness was driving on the main A970 near Quarff, around five miles south of Lerwick, when he noticed the flames.
He managed to stop the vehicle at the side of the road and then escaped from the burning cabin.
Fire services in Lerwick were alerted at midday and had the blaze extinguished 20 minutes later.
Police never attended, and there were only slight delays to traffic.
A Scottish Water spokesman said: “The fire service swiftly attended and put the fire out by 1222hrs.
“We want to apologise to any road users impacted upon by this incident and we extend our thanks to the local fire service for their swift and effective assistance.
“A full investigation is now underway into the cause of the fire.
