PEOPLE who sign up to a new service offered by Shetland Library will be able to read a wide variety of digital magazines for free.
The library has begun offering Zinio, a digital magazine download service, featuring 25 magazines including the National Geographic, Marie Claire, Classic Boats, Health and Fitness, The Economist and Rolling Stone.
They can be viewed on smartphones, tablet devices and computers from anywhere in the world using a Shetland Library borrower’s number.
Shetland Library systems officer David Thomson, who set up the service, said the range of titles had been chosen “very carefully”.
Magazines such as the National Geographic offer video and interactive contact, and readers using small screen devices can zoom in to see fine details and to read smaller print.
“In Shetland we get free internet at the local ferry terminals and most public buildings and leisure centres,” Thomson said, “so it’s remarkably convenient to be able to download a top quality magazine.”
The library is to hold drop in sessions on 1 and 3 February to talk people through the initial registration process.
Shetland Islands Council leader Gary Robinson said it was an “excellent new service that complements the wide range that’s already on offer at Shetland Library”.
“It’s really good to see the library keeping up with the latest technology and innovations that will allow people the length and breadth of the isles to access its services.”
