News / 80 attend astronomer’s talk
SHETLAND Astronomical Society has said they were pleased with the public’s response to a three day visit of a lecturer from the University of Edinburgh.
Around 80 people attended a talk on planet discoveries by Dr Ken Rice, in the Shetland museum, last Saturday.
Dr Rice spoke for about an hour on the standard model of star and planet formation and how recent discoveries of planets outside the solar system support the model.
Those present had afterwards the opportunity to use the society’s own 12” telescope and were able to view Venus, Mars, Jupiter plus four of its moons.
While in Shetland, Dr Rice also gave talks at the Anderson and Brae High schools as well as Sandwick Junior High School.
