News / Retired teacher lost his rag
A RETIRED school teacher living on the Shetland island of Yell who lost his temper outside a Lerwick supermarket and damaged a car has been given four months to pay the cost of repair.
Lerwick Sheriff Court heard that 63 year old James Whitworth, of Flat 2, Old School House, Burravoe, was outside Tesco on 23 June when he spotted a car parked on a double yellow line and saw red.
He scratched the car’s door and wing panel, explaining to police when they were called that he had lost his temper.
Defence agent Tommy Allan said that Whitworth had initially remonstrated with the driver and only inflicted the damage as the car drove away after a “rude gesture” was made to him.
Sheriff Graeme Napier ordered Whitworth to pay £409 compensation to cover the cost of repair, giving him until January to come up with the cash.
