News / Ex youth worker bought youth booze
A FIFTY year old former youth worker who bought alcohol for a 15 year old boy was fined £300 at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday morning.
Gordon Sinclair, of 18 St Olaf Street, Lerwick, pled guilty to buying two bottles of vodka, one bottle of Drambuie and three small crates of beer for the boy from the Tesco supermarket, on 20 March this year.
The court heard that Sinclair knew the boy who approached him outside the supermarket and was told the alcohol was for a friend’s 18th birthday.
Defence solicitor Tommy Allan said his client was embarrassed and ashamed of his behaviour, adding that Sinclair thought the boy was 17 rather than 15.
Sheriff Philipp Mann said he took the case very seriously and told Sinclair that as a youth worker he should be particularly aware of the purpose of the licensing law which was designed to protect children.
