THE ACTOR who plays DI ‘Tosh’ in the Shetland TV series has promised her character will have a “memorable exit”.

Alison O’Donnell, an original cast member of Shetland as DI Alison ‘Tosh’ McIntosh, is set to bow out of the show after series 11, which begins airing next week.

She told the BBC that she filmed “some of the most challenging scenes I’ve ever shot for the show” for her exit.

And O’Donnell revealed that all of the crew came dressed as Tosh on her final day of filming, wearing Fair Isle jumpers and putting their hair up in a bun.

A historic murder and a body pulled from the boot of an underwater car will form the heartbeat of series 11 of the Shetland TV series.

The BBC has revealed more plot details for the new series of the hit show, which will begin airing on BBC One on Thursday 12 November.

DI Ruth Calder (Ashley Jensen) and Tosh (Alison O’Donnell) are set to make a grim discovery when a car is dredged from the water containing the skeletal remains of an unknown male.

The car belongs to Dr Raymond Linden, a respected local GP who fled the isles nine years previous, which unfolds an investigation to track down Dr Linden and uncover the victim’s identity.

Joining the cast this year are Scottish comedy duo Gregor Fisher, best known for playing Rab C Nesbitt, and Still Game’s Gavin Mitchell.

Fisher will play Donald Pierce, a “lonely and overzealous old man, who finds himself unwittingly embroiled in the investigation”.

The BBC said the investigation will take the police team to “unexpectedly dark and dangerous places in their quest for the truth”.

O’Donnell has said that a “huge amount of work” went into her final scenes, including “the building of special sets, an incredible stunt artist, and some extremely deep emotional digging.”

She said it had been difficult to film her last day on Shetland.

“Our producer Angus [Sharpe] made a speech after we wrapped my final scene but sadly I can’t really remember what he said because I was crying, it just came over me,” O’Donnell told the BBC.

She said she would “miss the magic and the majesty” of Shetland once she leaves the show.

“I’ll also miss bringing my family and doing all our favourite trips – Sands of Sound beach and poking around in all the little gift shops,” she added.

“But I really look forward to coming up in a few years and taking my children back to all our favourite haunts and seeing what’s changed and what’s the same.”

Along with Jensen and O’Donnell, the likes of Steven Robertson (DC Sandy Wilson) and Lewis Howden (Sergeant Billy McCabe) are also back in action.

Series 11 will begin on BBC One on Thursday 12 November at 9pm.
