Community / Could every Kirsty (or Kirstie) please stand up?
SHETLANDERS named Kirsty or Kirstie are being asked to come forward as part of an 11-year old girl’s campaign to support children with brain tumours.
Kirsty Waugh has launched the My Name is Kirsty campaign to help locate as many people in the UK called Kirsty or Kirstie as possible.
Almost 1,000 Kirstys have come forward since the campaign was launched last week, with the aim to map out all the Kirstys in the UK.
Kirsty’s dad Mat Waugh said the family had visited Shetland on holiday a few years ago, and were now appealing for help from local people.
“So far [there are] no Kirstys or other supporters on the Shetland Islands – and given our amazing holiday there a few years ago, that feels like a big shame,” he said.
“There are thousands of Kirstys in the country, so we’d love to fill in the gap here.”
Anyone named Kirsty or Kirstie can sign up and add themselves to the map here.
Kirsty was diagnosed with a brain tumour in November 2024, and has been on chemotherapy ever since.
She raised £120,000 for children with different types of cancer last year, and has now turned her attention to the My Name Is Kirsty campaign.
This year she said she was trying to show “how much everyone cares about children with brain tumours”, and to help find better cures and treatments.
Already the campaign has raised over £9,000 for OSCAR’s, a paediatric brain tumour charity.
