Business / Reopened Yell shop given alcohol licence – with postal service on the horizon too

A RECENTLY reopened shop in Yell has been given a premises licence for off-sales alcohol – while a post office service looks set to follow too.

Brough Store in Burravoe will be allowed to sell alcohol from 10am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday.

The application was heard at the Shetland Islands licensing board on Monday.

The shop opened earlier this summer in the building which formerly hosted the Brough Stores until it closed in the 1990s.

Owner Leslie Madden also confirmed at Monday’s meeting that the Burravoe Post Office service will relocate to his shop after Christmas.

The opportunity reared its head earlier this year when it was announced that the Burravoe Post Office branch was due to close in July following the retirement of the postmistress, who ran it from her home.

After something of a U-turn, the Post Office said in May that it would explore keeping a postal service going in the community instead of permanently closing it.

The meeting heard on Monday that Yell Community Council had welcomed the licensing application.

Shetland West councillor Liz Peterson noted there were no objections against the application, while she did not see any issues with overprovision.

She also said it is important to support and encourage local and rural business.

Board chairman Neil Pearson also said it was “excellent” to see a local business opening and “providing to the community”.

Madden said significant renovations on the shop building has taken five years, with the post office service set to come in after Christmas.
