Business / Mareel cafe/bar to close in November due to staff shortages
THE MAREEL cafe/bar will be closed throughout November due to staff shortages, it has been announced.
The venue said however that it will be open for all scheduled events.
A reduced service will also be available from the foyer outside of these times.
Shetland Arts said the venue has again been experiencing hospitality recruitment challenges.
Mareel said new team members have been recruited who are due to start in the coming weeks, and further recruitment is underway, “but still we have been left stretched during this transition”.
Operations manager Peter Tomlinson added: “We’ve had a few of our team move on to new opportunities, and others due to start with us are still in the process of finishing up their other notice periods.
“Combined with our recent recruits still finding their feet in their roles, it’s made things really tight for us for a few weeks.
“Closing wasn’t an easy call, but it’s the right one to make sure things run as smoothly as possible, and our staff will be fully trained and ready to go for the busy festive season ahead.”
Shetland Arts said it would like to thank its customers for their understanding and ongoing support.
The cafe/bar has been affected by staff shortages at a number of points over the last year or two.
During one period last year it was temporarily closed an extra three days a week before things picked up again.
He said back then that “we sit at this kind of uncomfortable crossroads of hospitality and of being in Shetland”.
