NHS Shetland’s cardiac nurse specialist Marie Hurson has been highly commended at a national awards ceremony.
Hurson was nominated in the clinical leadership prize at the RCN Scotland Nurse of the Year Awards, with its ceremony taking place on Thursday.
The Royal College of Nursing’s (RCN) website had said that as a single-handed practitioner for many years, the Hurson “played a pivotal role in developing and expanding cardiac nursing pathways, ensuring equitable access to high-quality care for Shetland residents”.
“Marie is praised for establishing and delivering essential cardiac services such as the cardiac nurse referral and heart failure pathways, cardiac rehabilitation, and remote monitoring for heart failure patients,” it added.
THE NHS has warned that people on Vodafone may have difficulties accessing the 111 service in Scotland today (Friday).
People needing to contact 111 is asked to try switching to Wi-Fi calling, or use another mobile operator or landline if possible. Health advice is also available online.
SHETLAND MSP Beatrice Wishart has reaffirmed her commitment to championing equality for all LGBT+ people.
It comes during Pride Month and ahead of Shetland Pride, which takes place tomorrow (14 June).
“Around the globe LGBT+ people face oppression and discrimination simply because of who they are. In over 60 countries around the world, homosexuality is still criminalised,” she said.
“From poorer health outcomes to higher rates of homelessness, inequalities for LGBT+ people persist in the UK.
“All LGBT+ people should be free to be who they are, in a society that celebrates diversity and is committed to equality and justice. I look forward to a world where nobody is disadvantaged because of their identity.”
Meanwhile the rainbow flag has been flying on top of Lerwick Town Hall today (Friday).
LOCAL childcare provider Hame Fae Hame will continue to receive funding from the Scottish Government’s Access to Childcare project.

For the 2025/26 the Scalloway business will receive nearly £40,000.
The purpose of the fund is to support childcare solutions that enable more accessible and affordable childcare for families. Nearly £1.5 million will support the seven initiatives in Scotland over the next two years.
Hame Fae Hame, which provides flexible wraparound care and caters for children aged between 12 months and 12 years, has received funding from the scheme for a number of years.
COUNCIL staff in Scotland are to be balloted after unions received a two-year pay offer from local government employers COSLA.
The new offer is for four per cent this year and 3.5 per cent for 2026/27.
UNISON’s local government committee has met to discuss the offer and has decided to recommend to members that they vote to accept.
