Sport / Sporting round-up 30 May
THE COUNTDOWN is on until this year’s junior inter-county, which Shetland are set to host next weekend.
Nearly 100 young athletes will compete across athletics, football, hockey, swimming and netball over a packed two days of action on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 June.
Athletics will kick the event off next Saturday at the Clickimin at 10am, before attention switches to Brae for the hockey match between Shetland and Orkney at 3.30pm.
The football closes out day one at 7pm at Gilbertson Park.
The quest to lift the Stuart Cup will then resume on Sunday morning with the netball match starting at the Clickimin at 9.30am.
The swimming will then potentially decide whether Orkney retain the cup, or whether Shetland wrestle it back, at the Clickimin at 11.15am.
Athlete Layla Todd is the overall captain of team Shetland this year.
SHETLAND’s remaining Highland Amateur Cup contingent are preparing for their second round ties tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon.
Lerwick Spurs will travel to Helmsdale, near Sutherland, for a 12.30pm kick-off against Westside FC.

Scalloway’s tie against Iochdar Saints has been postponed.
Earlier in the week a serious leg injury for Scalloway’s Hayden Jamieson had overshadowed their opening league fixture against Whitedale.
The match had to be stopped in the first half at Fraser Park after Jamieson sustained the injury, which resulted in him being flown to Aberdeen for treatment.
He had been due to be part of Shetland’s men’s football squad for July’s Island Games in Orkney.
In Monday’s other premier league action, champions Celtic returned to winning ways with a comfortable 3-0 win over town rivals Thistle.
Jack Simpson, Robert Smith and Kennedy Moar were on the scoresheet as the Celts resumed their quest to retain the title.
