Letters / Tourist office needs local industry backing

The spring/summer tourist season is now in full swing. Those many local accommodation and retail businesses will be already feeling the benefits.

Walking along from my home in Leog, along Commercial Street, I have already supported many visitors with information and advice.

In my job as a community worker at Scalloway Community Centre, I have already supported a couple of dozen tourists with information advice, tea, coffee and soup! They all made donations.

It is time for our sector to put its full weight behind Shetland Tourism Association and our Whalsa Women Warriors to get the tourist office back open, either by becoming members of STA and/or making a proportionate contribution – 10%? – of net profits to get the office open.

It will only be to the local industry’s long-term benefit to maintain and grow ourreputation as a welcoming and helpful place to visit.

Come along now, join the already valiant effort to support your industry. Maybe a list of those already contributed with hard cash and voluntary time to open the office may encourage others?
