News / All set for Shetland Classic Motor Show
THE COMMITTEE behind the 18th Shetland Classic Motor Show is firing from all cylinders to get ready for this year’s event, which takes place at the Clickimin Leisure Complex in Lerwick over the first weekend in June.
Visitors to the popular biennial event will notice a number of changes implemented by “the younger guys” who have taken over the organisation from Maurice Mullay and Graham Johnston.
Committee member Larry Cluness said rather than exhibiting classic cars in both the main and the bowls halls, the new layout will see the bowls hall dedicated entirely to motorbikes.
This change means that more classic cars will be on show outside on the tarmac area around the Clickimin.
Cluness said the creation of a website at https://shetlandclassicmotorshow.co.uk/2018.htm allowed for online registration to the event for the first time.
“Numbers are very healthy. We have more than 290 exhibitors registered, many coming to the show with more than one exhibit,” he said. “There are also a good number of entries from south, including from the continent.
“There will be a vast range of vehicles on show – everything from a supercharged 1930 Bentley to a 1990 Honda Civic.”
Cluness added that he was particularly pleased to welcome a number of Vauxhall Chevette HSRs, including two very rare black ones.
He said another big change this year will be the new parking arrangements for visitors. Apart from disabled access and for those using the gym and swimming pool at the Clickimin, everybody visiting the classic motor show is required to park their vehicles at the new Anderson High School car park and walk from there across to the showground.
The committee is also organising island tours to allow visitors to enjoy the freedom of the road and see some of Shetland’s scenery. These will take place on Thursday and Friday prior to the event, as well as on the following Monday and Tuesday.
Cluness said everybody involved would like to express their gratitude to NorthLink for the “excellent fare discount they provide every show for the visiting exhibitors.”
Shetland Classic Motor Show will be open on the Saturday from 10am to 6pm and from 10am to 5pm on the Sunday. Entry fee is £5 for adults and £2.50 for concessions. Entry for under 5s is free.
