Local Government Election 2017 / Julie Buchan

Julie Buchan
Candidate Name Julie Jemima Buchan/td>
Electoral Ward Shetland Central
Description (if any) Independent

My name is Julie Buchan, I was born in Shetland and I have lived in Scalloway since 1979.  I am married and have two grown up children. Scalloway has grown considerably over the past 38 years but still has the closeness of a village, and a place I love to live in.

Central ward, as a whole, still has that community spirit that can only come from generations of families living and working in their local areas. I have in the past often thought about standing for central, but until now I’ve never had the time needed to make a true commitment to such an important job.

I have previously worked in both the whitefish sector and the salmon industry, where I worked my way up to HR/payroll manager during my 17 years at Lerwick Fish Traders. I am excited about what lies ahead, and feel that if I go forward with an open mind and positive attitude I can represent central to do my best for everybody. I know words are easy, and actions speak louder, but until election day words are all I have, and if you put your trust in me I will work my hardest for you.

Central still has many of the same issues affecting it as it did five years ago, with affordable housing being the main one. If we are to keep our communities vibrant then affordable housing for young families has to be top of the agenda. It is good to see new businesses being set up, and existing ones thriving, something the council must actively be supporting, especially in areas where there is not ready employment.

Brexit remains an unknown quantity, and nobody can predict what will happen, only speculate. While the fishing industry stands to benefit from the return of control of its waters, the farmers and crofters will be losing a great deal in the agricultural support now being received. The SIC must ensure that both sectors receive the support needed from all levels of government to make sure of the right outcome.

It would be good to see a bit of “decentralisation” going on, why not house departments outside of Lerwick? Most people get in touch by email or phone, and those employed do not all live in Lerwick, so with the White House still out of commission let’s see some of the departments moving.

I think it’s really good that 16 and 17 year olds now get to vote. It means that they will have a meaningful say in what they would like to see happening, even if they can’t stand themselves until they’re 18.

I will be going around houses speaking to the constituents of Shetland Central in the coming weeks, and finding out what is important to you,

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and please use your vote on 4 May, make me your #1 choice and I will give you a voice.
