News / All is calm during sail training ship’s visit
NORWEGIAN sail training ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl, a regular visitor to these parts, stopped by Lerwick Harbour en route home from a trip to the United States at the end of the week.
She set sail back to her home city Bergen on Saturday having arrived back from Norfolk, Virginia. The gales she encountered off Sumburgh Head on Thursday were in stark contrast to the mirror-like calm in the harbour on Friday morning.
That day saw members of the class of ’77 from the Royal Norwegian Naval Academy attend a ceremony at Lerwick War Memorial to remember those who died in World War Two.
The sea cadets had been on a cadets’ leadership course sailing from Norfolk in Virginia across the Atlantic.
Statsraad Lehmkuhl and her crew took place in the Boston Tea Pot Challenge, breaking the record by covering 1,555 nautical miles under sail in 124 hours at an average speed of 12.54 knots.
