News / Police confirm identity of driver killed in crash

POLICE have confirmed that the driver killed following a serious road accident near the Cunningsburgh Hall on Sunday afternoon was 66 year old Michael Robertson.

Robertson, a retiree from Sandwick, was driving a silver Kia Picanto when it collided with a sport utility vehicle, a black Toyota RAV4, at 3.27pm.

The driver and two passengers within the Toyota were not injured.

Police said the A970 – the main road between Sumburgh Airport and Lerwick – would remain closed on Monday while a road traffic collision investigation is carried out by the divisional road policing unit.

Local diversions via Aithsetter were put in place on Sunday and will continue to be managed by local police officers.

Police added that if anyone had any information about the incident or any other relevant details prior to the collision, they were encouraged to contact the poliec by dialling 101.
