News / Death on oil platform

AN OIL worker has died after he fell into the sea from the Harding platform in the early hours of Thursday.

The 62-year-old man was flown from the Taqa operated platform to hospital in Lerwick but has since died.

The jigsaw helicopter Rescue Bond 1, based on the Miller platform, landed the man at the Clickimin emergency landing site at just after 4am.

A company spokes person said: “A TAQA employee fell overboard during a maintenance activity on the platform. He was recovered from the sea by a support vessel and transferred to Gilbert Bain Hospital in Shetland by helicopter. The next of kin has been informed.

“Our immediate thoughts are with the family and friends of our colleague at this extremely sad time. TAQA is providing its fullest support to all those involved.”

An investigation is being carried out by Police Scotland, the Health and Safety Executive and Crown Office.

Police Scotland said it was treating the incident as a work-related death.

The Harding platform is located 90 miles southeast of Sumburgh.
