Letters / They deserved to win

I write as an unsuccessful candidate for the ward of Shetland West to firstly congratulate Theo Smith, Frank Robertson and Gary Robinson, for their well-deserved election to the council.

I became aware at the Weisdale hustings just how much these gentlemen had committed themselves in the past to the well-being of the west side community and without reservation I genuinely believe they deserved to win. Well done the three of you.

I must also thank the fabulous Shetland folk I met around and about during the campaign for their incredible courtesy, friendliness and good humour. They made my campaigning such great fun, especially the three gentlemen I talked to on the Aith, Bixter road last Wednesday. I will certainly appoint you as my image consultants next time around.

As to your priceless advice, “I have had the hair cut; I will grow the recommended beard but will refrain from putting on enough weight to be able to sit on Allan Wishart to squash him to death. That would not be politic!”

I will also thank those who voted for me, I am truly humbled that so many put your trust in a relative incomer. I thank you all.

Ian Tinkler
Candidate
Shetland West

Shetland News is asking its many readers to consider start paying for their dose of the latest local news delivered straight to their PC, tablet or mobile phone.

Journalism comes at a price and because that price is not being paid in today’s rapidly changing media world, most publishers - national and local - struggle financially despite very healthy audience figures.

Most online publishers have started charging for access to their websites, others have chosen a different route. Shetland News currently has  over 600 supporters  who are all making small voluntary financial contributions. All funds go towards covering our cost and improving the service further.

Your contribution will ensure Shetland News can: -

  • Bring you the headlines as they happen;
  • Stay editorially independent;
  • Give a voice to the community;
  • Grow site traffic further;
  • Research and publish more in-depth news, including more Shetland Lives features.
