Community keen to retain Westerskeld chapel
LOCAL people are keen to see the Westerskeld Methodist chapel remain in the community.
That was a key message from a public meeting held on Tuesday after the chapel went on the open market.
Around 40 to 50 people turned up for the well-attended meeting.
Shetland West councillor Liz Peterson said: “There was an excellent turnout of folk at the meeting, and the overwhelming wish of the attendees was that the chapel should remain as a place of worship within the district of Westerskeld.
“The community are keen to explore options which might enable this to happen, and therefore are hoping to engage in productive communication with the Methodist church going forward, to reach a solution.”
The Culswick Methodist chapel was also put up for sale at the same time, with both properties being marketed by Arthur and Simpson.
A similar public meeting will take place for Culswick at Skeld’s Back Hall on Saturday at 3pm.
The Methodist Church said running the chapels was no longer sustainable.
The Westerskeld chapel is on the market for offers over £40,000, with Culswick going for offers over £25,000.
