News / BP drill rig
OIL giant BP has awarded Norwegian firm Odfjell Drilling a huge £800 million contract to build a semi submersible rig for the Schiehallion field west of Shetland.
The fixed seven year contract, the largest in the Scandinavian company’s 40 year history, is due to start in late 2014.
The sixth generation rig is to be built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) in South Korea for the harsh environment in the north Atlantic.
Construction engineering has started with keel laying scheduled for March 2013.
