Letters / What’s he on about?

My heart sank when I saw another letter from Philip Andrews of Unst, but I read it anyway (Voters saw the truth: SN, 24/09/14).

His vision of a future, as laid out in his letter, suggests to me that he has absolutely no idea what goes on in the real world of politics.

His plan is that politicians’ assets and car be taken away, and held hostage somewhere, if they fail to get into power. These assets and car are confiscated and they have to get a lift, take the bus or walk.

Eh?

What’s he on about?

I’m guessing he means that, if they get into power, they get their stuff back. I don’t know what kind of thinking this is, but it doesn’t make any sense whatsoever regarding who is suitable to be a politician.

Perhaps he means that politicians in power, who have assets and a car, make better politicians. If so, I doubt Mr Andrews will see this notion as a ‘plank’ in anyone’s manifesto for the next General Election.

But just in case anyone likes it for their political party, I can see it all now –

VOTE FOR J. BLOGGS FOR PRIME MINISTER – SHE HAS POWER AND ASSETS AND A CAR

DON’T VOTE FOR M. SMITH FOR PRIME MINISTER – HE HAS NO POWER AND NO ASSETS OR A CAR

On to Alex Salmond: Why does Mr Andrews think he is worse than David Cameron, Nick Clegg or Ed Milliband? They are all senior politicians stating their respective political views.

Mr. Cameron’s ‘panic giveaways’ were not prepared a year in advance as Mr Andrews says, they were hastily devised at the last minute due to a poll showing the Yes voters might win the referendum.

But, unwittingly and serendipitously for him, David Cameron has seen a chance to divide and conquer, due to English people and MPs being angry and demanding more powers for England.

In the next few years, this will lead to the ‘federalism’ Mr Carmichael is referring to. It was not his idea, it is just a prophecy based on what is likely to happen.

My other question to Mr Andrews is – what’s wrong with Scotland receiving free NHS prescriptions and higher education, as well as free eye tests and free bus travel for pensioners to name a couple more benefits Scots enjoy?

That would be good for the rest of the UK, wouldn’t it?

Actually, I can’t wait for the fun to begin –

  • English MPs and the Lords blocking new powers for Scotland;
  • voters in Scotland turning their backs on the Labour party;
  • the Conservatives winning the General Election next year, and
  • voting for more powers for England, and
  • blocking Scottish MPs from voting in English matters, and
  • Boris Johnson becoming a Conservative MP, and
  • becoming Prime Minister in a few years time.

I don’t think this is a vision anyone in Scotland, or Shetland, including Mr Andrews, ever imagined. But if England really wants to break away from us, who are we to stop them?
