Letters / In dark times, values are essential
This May’s Scottish elections will take place against a background of extreme volatility in the world. Violence rules, the old world order is fractured, democracy itself is under attack. The moral compass of some world leaders has swung towards depravity and evil.
Yet here in Shetland we are still privileged. On 7 May we will have a free vote, and this vote is more important than ever. Who is best equipped to represent Shetland? What attributes are we looking for?
In dark times values are essential. While Shetland’s election campaign has been marred by personal attacks, I notice that Hannah Mary Goodlad has been respectful and positive, focussing on what she can offer us, rather than trolling others. Showing integrity.
I want an MSP who has the ability and energy to do justice to a demanding job. Someone who can bring people with diverse viewpoints together, can work towards solutions for the common good, has the vision to see a way forward, and then to drive that solution forward. I believe that Hannah Mary Goodlad is that person.
To take just one example, I believe that Hannah Mary’s proposed Shetland Energy Act is well considered, and is the best chance that we have of gaining some local control over Shetland’s energy resources, and of rediscovering some of the confidence that we had back in the 1970s when oil arrived.
So, on 7 May, please do vote. Democracy is precious. I will be voting for Hannah Mary Goodlad. In these difficult times, I feel that she is the positive change that we need.
