Letters / Candidates must stand by promise to champion fishing
I attended Wednesday night’s election hustings on the fishing industry, where a lively and engaging debate took place.
Sheila Keith, Shetland Fishermen’s Association executive officer, did an excellent job in organising the event, as did Paul Riddell in his role as chair.
It was good to see and hear the views of all the candidates, including Labour and Reform who attended virtually. (Although somewhat elusive up until now, it was obvious that Vic Currie had done his homework as he was well versed on the topics being discussed!)
Fishing is hugely important to Shetland’s economy and heritage, and I think there’s been a glaring lack of support for the industry across all levels of government. A reset is required, and listening and talking must be followed up by any action necessary to support and protect the industry.
Hopefully, the candidates will stand by their promise to champion the industry and put the islands at the heart of future policy making, as set out in SFA’s manifesto.
I look forward to the next week’s hustings organised by Radio Shetland at Mareel.
