News / Looking back on the week – pool closure, election candidates, fundraiser joy
THE CLOSURE of the Scalloway swimming pool and the confirmation of two new election candidates were among the headlines this week.
Despite the arrival of the Easter holidays there has been plenty to write about in Shetland – with the final session at the Scalloway pool on Tuesday night gaining lots of attention.
We also ran a feature the day before with some memories of the pool’s opening in 1993.
Prior to that the Conservatives finally named their election candidate – Douglas Barnett, a 21-year-old student at Aberdeen University.
A couple of days later independent candidate Peter Tait also confirmed his intention to stand on a ticket to relocate the monarchy to Scotland amid calls for “constitutional reform”.
Also on Wednesday local councillor Bryan Peterson spoke of his surprise and joy after the fundraising campaign for his brain tumour treatment abroad reached the target of £150,000 in less than a fortnight.
Bryan feels ‘lifted up’ as islanders dig deep to raise more than £150k in just 12 days
Shetland News also revealed how an expression of interest has been lodged for Lerwick in the UK Government’s town of culture 2028 competition.
Thursday saw election candidates speak out against online abuse, while Shetland Women’s Aid announced how free legal support would be offered to domestic abuse victims.
Meanwhile there was sad news from Burra after an 83-year-old man died following a one-vehicle road accident in Bridge End on Thursday night.
Shetland News also ran two powerful stories on endometriosis – one involving a campaigner retelling her experience of attending a parliament event, while the other focused on fundraising success.
Elsewhere we also brought news of a near-£1 million funding award for the Bressay development group, while maintenance logs of fire stations showed reports of mice entering lockers and birds fouling PPE at two buildings.
