Energy / Community liaison group planned for Mossy Hill wind farm

An image from 2019 of the Mossy Hill wind farm would look like from Bressay, under the original consented plans.

COMMUNITY council representatives are being invited to join a new community liaison group for the planned Mossy Hill wind farm.

The group would allow developer Statkraft to share updates on the project and answer any questions from communities around the site.

A letter to Lerwick Community Council added that it would also help to shape the community benefit fund for the wind farm project.

One or two representatives are being sought from the community councils in Lerwick, Scalloway and Tingwall, Whiteness and Weisdale.

The letter also said it is proposed that construction on the wind farm would start this summer.

The Mossy Hill wind farm – planned on land near Lerwick and Scalloway – received planning consent from councillors for twelve 145m turbines in 2019.

But developer Statkraft has now requested to alter the plans to eight turbines after acquiring the project from Peel Energy in 2023.

Statkraft also has two wind farms proposed in Yell – Beaw Field and Energy Isles, both of which have planning consent.

The developer has overseen a community liaison group for the Yell projects for a number of years.

The Yell wind farms are behind Mossy Hill in terms of construction timeline, with an aim for Energy Isles and Beaw Field to be operational by the end of 2032.

Statkraft said earlier this year it was considering revising the design of the Beaw Field development, which was also acquired from Peel in 2023.

At the moment the plans for Beaw Field in the south of Yell include 17 turbines, with 18 for Energy Isles on the north west of the island.
