Letters / A missed opportunity for all of us
Brian Nugent’s extreme claim Green policies wipe out economies (Shetland News, 29 January 2026) is easily disproved by looking to the Irish Republic.
Along with Austria and Belgium, where Greens are in power, they also form powerful coalitions as in Germany, and many other countries.
A coalition of SNP and Scottish Greens could theoretically be good for Scotland, where the electorate desires a sustainable, wellbeing economy which is fair.
In practice, the previous agreement to work together failed, mainly because of poor leadership within the SGP [Scottish Green Party] and careerist politicians seeking to make a name for themselves.
Until this changes, the Greens will never gain a decision-making position in the Scottish Parliament which is a missed opportunity for all of us.
Contrast this with Zack Polanski’s leadership of the English and Welsh Green Party.
Currently these two parties are the only main ones (there are several small ones too) in this election which are registered in Scotland with the Electoral Commission.
The Liberal Democrats, Tories and Labour, along with the limited company Reform UK are all registered in London, England only.
