Letters / Disappointed but time to move on – Lerwick Spurs Football Club public statement

Lerwick Spurs Football Club wishes to place on record its firm position regarding recent decisions related to the 2025 Premier League season.

Lerwick Spurs categorically rejects any suggestion that the club knowingly or intentionally fielded an ineligible player. All actions taken in relation to the player’s participation were made in good faith and on the basis of the information formally available to the club at the time.

Whitedale crowned league champions after vote by clubs

At the original disciplinary hearing convened by the Shetland Football Association, the panel heard evidence that Lerwick Spurs had not received proper notice of any suspension affecting the player in question. The panel specifically recognised that the Association’s failure to issue the requisite Suspension Summary Sheet to Lerwick Spurs constituted an administrative error on its part, and on that basis the club was cleared of wrongdoing and no further action was recommended.

Lerwick Spurs is both disappointed and surprised by the subsequent Scottish Amateur Football Association decision to uphold Whitedale Football Club’s appeal and to impose points deductions that overturn the outcome of matches in which the club acted transparently and without any intent to breach the rules. The club notes that this later decision contradicts the original finding.

Despite the club’s clear disagreement with the outcome of the appeal, Lerwick Spurs believes it is important not to prolong the controversy or further tarnish the 2025 season. Accordingly, the club will not be taking the matter any further and will instead allow the record of events and the documented recognition of the Association’s administrative error to speak for themselves.

Lerwick Spurs now turns full attention to the 2026 season with renewed determination, unity, and focus on on-field performance. The club remains committed to fair play, transparency, and strong relationships within the Shetland and Scottish amateur football community and looks forward to competing with pride for its players, coaches and supporters.
