Community / Post office service to return to Burravoe soon

The Brough Store in Burravoe, Yell.

A POST office service in set to return to Burravoe in the south of Yell in a couple of months.

The new service is due to launch at the reopened Brough Store shop on 18 March.

It comes after the former Burravoe branch closed in July following the retirement of the postmistress, who ran it from her home.

This news caused concern in the community, especially over a lack of public consultation, with Post Office Ltd seemingly performing a U-turn over plans to replace it.

Post Office Ltd now says it is “delighted” to inform the community that the branch will re-open at the Brough Store.

“We are keen to restore services to this community as soon as possible, so we have decided to go ahead with our plans,” the company said in a letter.

“The re-opening of the branch in a new location is a commercial decision for Post Office Ltd and we are not seeking feedback on this aspect of the change.”

However, it is seeking feedback on some specific aspects, namely accessibility.

The proposed branch opening times are 9am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 5.30pm, Monday to Saturday.

Post Office Ltd said the same products and services will still be available, adding there is a step at the entrance of the new premises.

Inside the shop there will be a hearing loop and space for a wheelchair.

Brough Store opened its doors last summer after significant renovations to the building.

The building formerly hosted the Brough Stores shop which closed in the 1990s.
