News / New yellow weather warning for snow and ice issued
Scottish Water advises to take simple steps to prevent frozen pipes
TWO yellow weather warnings have been issued for Shetland today (Thursday) and into Friday.
The Met Office have issued a warning for snow from 4-8pm tonight.
A warning for snow and ice also extends from 8pm tonight until midday on Friday, with the Met Office saying that ice is expected to form widely as surfaces refreeze through the evening and overnight.
Scattered snowy showers are expected too, with some “further modest snow accumulations” inland and over higher ground possible.
It comes on the back of a week of wintry weather which has caused widespread disruption in Shetland, with no signs of a thaw just yet.
Meanwhile Scottish Water is reminding customers in Shetland to take simple steps to prevent frozen pipes during the cold weather – but without leaving taps running.
The utility said leaving taps running because doing so wastes significant amounts of water. Leaving taps running also does not guarantee protection against pipe bursts.
Instead, Scottish Water advises rural customers to:
- insulate and protect exposed pipes and water tanks – especially in outbuildings and remote locations.
- use frost-protection settings on boilers to keep water moving during cold snaps, and
- check vulnerable pipes now and take action.
