Weather / Met Office issues amber weather warning for snow

Police advise motorists not to travel unless journey is absolutely necessary

POLICE Scotland have reinforced its travel advice after the Met Office issued an amber weather warning for snow for Shetland.

The weather warning is in place from midnight until midday tomorrow (Saturday).

The Met Office said heavy snow showers and blizzard conditions are likely to add 10 to 15 cm of fresh snow to lower levels and as much as 20 to 30 cm to higher ground.

A police spokesperson said: “The forecasted heavy and persistent snow showers and ice mean it is likely for driving conditions to become hazardous in some areas and our advice is to plan ahead and consider if your journey is really necessary during the warning periods.

“If you need to travel, please drive to the conditions, be prepared for delays and allow extra time for your journey.

“Please don’t drive through road closures, the decision to close roads is not taken lightly and is done for public safety.”
