Council / Another path planned for Gulberwick

ANOTHER active travel path is set to come Gulberwick’s way – as well as a new bus lay-by above the village on the A970 main road.

A proposed new two-metre wide link path is set to be created between the Heathery Park housing area and the south end of the active travel path that was installed on the side of the A970.

A bus lay-by has also been proposed on the A970 opposite Upper Hillside on the side of the road heading north.

At the moment the bus has to stop on the road to pick up or drop off passengers.

Shetland Islands Council is currently tendering for the work, which will be paid for with Scottish Government funding.

Colin Gair, council’s asset and network management team leader within the roads service, said it is envisioned that another link will be created in future to connect into the Lower Hillside area of Gulberwick.

He also said the new bus lay-by would be a “significant improvement” for the number six bus service.

It comes after a new active travel path was installed on the east side of the A970 above Gulberwick last year.

Proposals have since emerged for a large combined cycling and walking path project between Lerwick and the Black Gaet junction, which could link into the Gulberwick path.
