History / No timescale for when Scalloway Castle could reopen
THERE are still no timescales for when the Scalloway Castle could reopen to the public as conservation work continues.
The historic attraction has been shut off to the public for a number of years due to the condition of parts of the structure.
A spokesperson for Historic Environment Scotland, which maintains the castle, previously said some of the remedial work required included dismantling and rebuilding of some of the decaying wallheads and chimneys, and consolidating the structure.
They added this week that work on wall heads is “progressing over the summer”.
But it is still too early to say when the castle and its grounds could reopen to the public.
“We’re continuing to take forward conservation work at Scalloway Castle, with repairs to wall heads using traditional techniques progressing over the summer,” the spokesperson said.
“In addition to planned repair work, the site will also be inspected by our specialist high level masonry teams.
“Timings are dependent on the findings of these tactile inspections as this will inform next steps at the site, including any further repairs required.
“Works can be affected by external factors such as weather dependencies, evolving scope of repair works and resourcing specialist teams, so we are not able to provide indicative dates for access to the castle or grounds at this stage.”
Scalloway Castle was the home of the notorious Earl Patrick Stewart, earl of Orkney and Shetland, and it was built in 1600.
