Education / Strike action to affect schools next week

All secondary departments and most primaries will be closed

STRIKE action is set to close most Shetland schools to children and young people on two days next week.

The action will affect schools on Tuesday (28 February) and Wednesday (1 March), with parents now beginning to be informed.

The industrial action is being undertaken by the EIS, SSTA and NASUWT unions.

All secondary departments will be closed, and most primary schools and some early learning and childcare settings will also be shut.

For those affected it will mean four days off in a row as Shetland schools will be closed on Friday and Monday for a long weekend.

The only primaries opening on both days will be Cullivoe, Fair Isle, Foula and Skeld, whilst North Roe will be open on Tuesday but shut on Wednesday.

Nurseries at the Brae, Sandwick, Bell’s Brae, Dunrossness, Fair Isle, Foula, Scalloway, Skeld, Sound and Whiteness schools will be open. Tingwall is to be confirmed.

The last walk-out by teachers as part of the ongoing nationwide dispute was on 6 February, which followed previous industrial action in November and January.

The strike action revolves around a pay increase for teachers, with the EIS calling for a ten per cent uplift.

A new offer was put to unions earlier this month, but it was rejected by the EIS.
