News / Watch footage of winchman being lowered in strong winds
THE DANGERS of winching a person off a vessel in strong winds has been reiterated after video footage of a coastguard rescue off Shetland on Monday morning was released.
An unwell crewman was taken off a fishing vessel 50 nautical miles south east of Sumburgh before being airlifted to Lerwick for treatment.
Video footage released by the coastguard shows a winchman being suffering the effects of the strong wind as he is lowered to the fishing boat.
The coastguard said it took “several minutes” for the winchman to touch down on the vessel due to the weather.
