A BEAUTY spot in Shetland continues to be cordoned off after an unexploded ordnance device was found washed up at the weekend.

Police said on Tuesday that a bomb disposal team from the Scottish mainland was now expected in the isles on either Wednesday or Thursday, depending on their workload and on ferries.

The badly-corroded MK25 phosphorous military marker was found on Meal Beach, in Burra, on Saturday afternoon.

The 18-inch long “highly toxic” device is believed to be very unstable and as such poses a “significant danger”.

Police and coastguard have set up a cordon to prevent people from entering the beach, which is located south east of the village of Hamnavoe.

A spokesman said: “Police request that members of the public stay clear of this area until further notice.”
