Letters / Rite of passage for the immature
I was tickled to read the letter by Páll Holm Johannesen (‘Whale hunt is “regulated and sustainable”‘, SN 25/7/15) justifying the slaughter of whales by Faroese vikings.
The old story that these creatures are an essential source of food for the starving islanders won’t wash any more, and hasn’t since the early twentieth century. The Faroese grind is a rite of passage for the seriously immature.
