News / Town hall reception for trio of games athletes
SHETLAND’S trio of Commonwealth Games athletes were given a civic reception at Lerwick Town Hall on Monday night.
Council convener Malcolm Bell elected to lay on the event for bronze medal winner Erraid Davies, swimmer Andrea Strachan and table tennis player Lynda Flaws as a token of the community’s appreciation of their achievements.
Davies, 13, won bronze in the 100 metre breaststroke para sport finals and her smile on the medal podium became one of the abiding moments for Team Scotland at July’s games, which were held in Glasgow.
Speaking at last week’s Full Council, Bell said all three athletes had done the islands proud. “I am sure all three athletes will go on to even bigger and better things and I hope other young folk (and perhaps not so young folk) in Shetland will now be inspired to follow in their footsteps in their chosen sport or activity,” he said.
