Letters / It is not too late

So the VE giant wind farm group are having to beg for support for their project!

Laughton Johnston’s plea for backing is noted (Speak up…now! SN, 14/08/14) but I think that he will find that from the first “public consultation” the majority voted against the project.

I for one do not believe that this process has gone through the democratic system.

If Shetland Charitable Trust and partners of VE had done the right thing following the Shetland wide public consultations they would have put it to the vote – yes or no for the VE project, in its current form.

Because they did not, they have caused years of argument between Shetlanders, cost millions of pounds, much of it on lawyer’s fees, and have achieved very little.

City judges may have come down on the side of VE’s project on legal grounds this time, but that does not make it right – if those same judges had to make a decision taking all the facts surrounding this debate over the past few years into account, they may have reached a different opinion.

It is not too late, even now, to give us a vote on this subject. It could be one more sheet for us to put our X on, on 18 September, as we vote for or against Scottish independence.

Like the majority of Shetlanders, I too believe that we already have a sustainable future on these islands, with many industries from fishing to decommissioning that could be expanded.

We don’t need to destroy the land with giant wind turbines, just to enrich a few, and the argument first put forward by VE that it was to reduce our carbon footprint, etc., has long been forgotten.

The scare story put about by VE, that if they don’t build the giant wind farm, “someone else” will do it (and take all the profits) has been scotched, so I wonder what else they will come up with.
