News / Pelagic trawler towed in

THE SHETLAND pelagic trawler Antarctic II was towed to Collafirth Pier on Saturday night after fouling her propeller and drifting three miles to the northwest of the isles.

The Skerries based whitefish boat Fairway was the first to respond to a call for assistance sent out by Shetland Coastguard.

The Serene, another locally based pelagic trawler, attached a line to the Antarctic II at just before 8pm on Saturday and towed her to Collafirth where they arrived just after midnight.

A spokesman for Shetland Coastguard said there had been no immediate danger as the weather was fine and the Antarctic II was drifting away from land.

Meanwhile, inter-island ferry services were called out twice overnight from Saturday to Sunday for ambulance runs.

First the ambulance service had to get an ambulance to Whalsay to collect a woman who had gone into labour. Later the same night the Yell ferry was tasked to take the island based ambulance to Toft.
