News / Sumburgh Head online

A WEBSITE following the ambitious project of restoring the historic Sumburgh Head lighthouse and converting it into a visitor attraction has just been launched.

The move comes as project co-ordinator Shetland Amenity Trust prepares to appoint a contractor for the £5.4 million project, later this month.

The website at www.sumburghhead.com will be regularly updated with news, information, photos, and details of public access as work progresses on the site.

Amenity trust general manager Jimmy Moncrieff said: “We are delighted to be working with the RSPB on this important project, which will benefit Shetland’s natural heritage and have a significant impact on heritage tourism in the area.

“Our funders have invested a considerable sum of money in Shetland’s heritage and we are very grateful for their support.”

The restoration work is scheduled to last for two years until 2014. The project attracted £3.7 million from outside funders, national and European.
